This sounds like an American Civil War token (is it copper, and roughly the size of a penny?), which were privately issued during the war to supplement the dwindling coin supply, as people hoarded coins during this time of uncertainty. Quite often, these tokens would bear a patriotic or pro-military message.

If it is, indeed, one, the value will probably be between $10 and $25 depending on condition - so unless you want the money, it's a great hands-on piece of Civil War history to hold on to!
