Who got credit for sewing the American flag?

A common myth is "George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross asked Betsy Ross to sew the American flag in May of 1776."

In reality the first US flag could not have been until June 14th 1777, the date of the flag resolution passed by the Continental Congress. Most believe the first flag was designed by Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. History does not tell us who actually made the first US flag. The popular story is that Betsy Ross of Philadelphia sewed flags, and may have made one of the early flags.
