What is the Mail Delivery Subsystem?

What it does is as the name implies: it delivers and receives email to/from other mail servers after getting one from a mail user agent (mua) program or receiving one from another server.

How it is called depends a lot on your OS and which specific server your host has installed. Some are named after feminine hygiene products.
