In newspapers, the placeline is often the first Word in the story, and indicates where the reporter was when he or she wrote the story. It is somewhat archaic, however, as it is a holdover from the 1940s and 1950s, when a newspaper gained respectability by paying to have a reporter fly to cover an event halfway around the world. Today's readers are less impressed by such efforts, although many newspaper editors haven't noticed.
