Why is pripyat forbidden?

Pripyat in Northern Ukraine is an abandoned city in the zone of alienation. The city of Pripyat and its surrounding were heavily contaminated by radiation from the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, but is much less contaminated now. It is considered relatively safe to visit and there are several Ukrainian companies offering guided tours around the area.
