Is your goldfish sick if the corner of its tail turned red then fell off?

Of course something is wrong and the fish is sick. I would assume something is very wrong if bits of me started going red and falling off. Poor water quality is the most common reason for fish getting sick. The first thing I would do is give the fish a large water change. Then I would make a point of doing at least a 50% water change every week.
