How do you convert rotational motion to vertical motion?

The most common means is by use of a spiral. Think of a long screw and a nut. If you keep the nut in one position and you rotate the screw threaded into the nut...the screw will move up or down as you rotate it. Many applications use this method, such as mechanical jacks as opposed to hydraulic or pneumatic based jacks.
