Yes there is a difference.

Crankcase (engine) oil

Used in the engine

Lubricates pistons, crankshaft, and valves

Thinner and handles heat + combustion byproducts

Gear oil

Used in gearboxes/differentials

Thicker, made for high pressure between gears

Not designed for engine heat or combustion
