What is the function of a choke in a variable speed drive?

It is used to reduce the hormonics in the system generated by Electronic components like VFDs etc. generaly we can consider input side as well as out side of the VFD. if u see the IEC1000-1/2/3 we have to consider 3% or 5% choke/filter at i/p and o/p of the vfds.
