Are the most commonly used drugs of the barbiturate family and they depress the central nervous system into a sleeplike condition?

I wouldn't say barbiturates to be common in recreational illicit/street use, but they have been used for anaesthetic and date rape most commonly. Yes, they do depress one into a sleep-like state, sometimes semi-concious, but having no memory of the events that took place when the drugs were active.
