Why do geckos' tails fall off and how does this process benefit them?

Geckos' tails fall off as a defense mechanism when they feel threatened. This process, known as autotomy, allows the gecko to escape from predators by leaving behind a wriggling tail that distracts the predator while the gecko makes its getaway.
