Is there a dome over the Earth?

Genesis 1:7 says that God created a firmament that separated the waters below from the waters above - obviously not the atmosphere, because it does not fill this role. At the time, the earth was thought to be flat, so the firmament was a dome.

Unless the Book of Genesis was being poetically metaphoric, or alluding to something spiritual, this was an erroneous view of the natural world. There is no dome.
