No one knows for sure. It is believed to be a portrait of a Florentine lady by the name of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a merchant. Monna means Mrs. Some art historians have suggested that it is da Vinci's self-portrait.
Mona Lisa is a famous painting of a sitting woman by Leonardo da vinci. Mona Lisa is named for Lisa del Giocondo, a member of the Gherardini family of Florence and Tuscany, Italy and the wife of wealthy Florentine silk merchant Francesco del Giocondo. The painting was commissioned for their new home and to celebrate the birth of their second son, Andrea.
