Killer whales, or orcas, reproduce through internal fertilization. The female has a gestation period of about 15 to 18 months before giving birth to a single calf, although twins can occur rarely. After birth, the mother provides care and nursing for the calf, which stays with her for several years to learn essential survival skills. Social structures within pods also help in raising and protecting the young.
