What is the difference between 40 and 40S pipe schedule?

The schedule value refers to the thickness of the wall of the pipe; the bigger the number (schedule) the bigger the wall thickness is of the pipe.

The thickness is relative to the diameter of the tube/pipe an the application it is being used in.
