What happens to the deer if there are no tigers in the forest?

Deer run on zig-zags all the time to avoid predators trying to catch them. But if the predator is a cheetah, running in zig-zags is no salvation to the deer, because cheetahs are the fastest predators and only in rare situations could a prey flee.
