What is the difference between quality assurance and quality improvement?

Assurance is about maintaining a quality standard - eg at the supermarket checkout my box of eggs is examined to ensure that none are cracked.

Quality improvement -to use the same example- would be about giving

the hens a better diet, environment etc so that they produced better eggs.
