They were a series of related tribes located north of China in an area called Mongolia. They were considered "barbarians" by everyone else who had to fight them. Generally, the term "Barbarian" was given to any group or culture that was foreign to those who were using the term. The Romans considered the Gauls barbarians, tjhe ancient Egyptians considered anyone other than them barbarians.

The term comes from the Greeks and originally referred to those who spoke a language that was unknown to the Greeks. They were said to make gibberish sounds like,"bar bar bar." Hence, "barbarians, those who says "bar bar bar."
