When were vinyl records invented?

In the year 1888 by a guy named Emile Berliner.

RCA introduced the vinyl record in the 1930's. It was a financial failure after a few years. Vinyl records became more common during WWII when their durability for shipment to our troops overseas became important. Generally vinyl did not become the material of choice until the late 1940's.
