More commonly spelled 'gimbal', a gimble is a support which allows the rotation of an object around a single axis. Thus, on a ship the compass is set on gimbals so that it remains level no matter what the motion of the ship.

The Word 'gimble' also appears in Lewis Carroll's poem Jabberwocky where it is used to mean 'bore holes like a gimlet'.

(A gimlet is a boring tool with a spiral shape, like a corkscrew.)
