What did they use to cut wheat in the olden days?

If you go back far enough in time, they used sickles and scythes, stacking the cut sheaves in stooks to dry in the field. Then came mechanical harvesters drawn by horses. Today, everything is mechanical, computerised, and automated, using huge monster combine harvesters.
