Why was the fur trade essential to the development of the Pacific Northwest?

it was essential because the animals fur was the reason why most explorers expeditions led them to areas that they haven't been before, and that the trading posts was a big help in the development of the Pacific Northwest, because different trading post from different companys were everywhere near the rockies. I don't know if my answers right but that's what i researched.
