How would you collect small animals that crawl along the ground?

You can collect small animals from the ground by getting a jar and trapping them inside that sounds mean) or you could get a leaf and try and get it to crawl on it (this could work with a stick to,anything the animal would be use to)and maybe you could even get it on your finger.
