In short, so tomorrow is better than today.

For a business it means that you are constantly improving your competitive position by improving quality, efficiency, innovation, or any other component that is vital to the system. If you do not continuously improve, any number of bad outcomes - customers stop buying, profitability declines, moral decreases - occur.

It is very similar for a hospital - a hostipal delivers care via a system of people, equipment, and processes. Absent a focus on continuous improvement an improvement to quality of care, reduction in length of stay, reduction in cost would be left to chance.
