I have a 99 Forester, the rear wiper stalled. I removed the inside hatch liner to get at motor. Could not remove wiper from shaft, so I disassembled motor "in place". Pulled the gear out and turned on the wiper switch...motor ran, but the wiper shaft was frozen. Then I used WD40 on the shaft bearing (where it passes through to the wiper). After it sat awhile, I could work the wiper by hand, kept at it, added more WD40 until it felt pretty free. Then I added heavier oil and tried to seal it with grease. Reassembled it (make sure you know where the wiper was relative to gear position) and all works fine. Water gets in there from weather, car wash, who knows? I have now done this twice, car has 191000miles, so I hope the second time was the last time. Takes about an hour and a half to do all of this. Allow 2 hours the first time!
