The surface of the ocean down to 600 feet is called the Epipelagic Zone, commonly called the Sunlight Zone. Whales, being mammals, must breathe air and have a blowhole on top of their head for just that purpose. If they dive deeper than 600 feet, they would be getting into the Mesopelagic Zone (also known as the Twilight Zone) which goes to 3,000 feet below sea level.

Humpback whales thrive in most of the world's oceans and seas, as they migrate as much as 16,000 miles per year.
