What happened to mr van Pels at the concentration camp?

About three weeks after arriving at Auschwitz, Mr. van Pels injured his thumb on work detail, and asked to be sent to sick bay. The next day, there was a "sweep" of sick bay, and all those who were there were sent to the gas chambers. He was the only one of those hiding in the annex who was actually gassed.
