Eastern painted turtles typically sleep by resting on the bottom of ponds or basking on logs or rocks during the day. They often remain inactive and submerged, using their ability to hold their breath for extended periods. While sleeping, they may retract their heads and limbs into their shells for protection. At night, they can also float just below the water's surface while remaining alert to potential predators.
