Mercedes-Benz is a division of the German automotive company Daimler AG. The company was founded by Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler in the late 19th century. As of my last update, Daimler AG's largest shareholders include institutional investors and the founding Daimler family, but the company operates as a publicly traded corporation.
