What was the Virginia government in the 1700s?

A Governor of the state was either chosen by whoever was ruling England at the time or elected by the people, and this Govenor was controlled by a legislature of the colonies which ultimately was controlled by parliament in England, though throughout the 18th century, England was losing it's grip on the new world and the Americas were becoming more independent.
