Why was it van Gogh that influenced Brett Whiteley's artworks?

Van Gogh did influence Whitley and Whitley did appropiate an image of Van Gogh's into one of Whitley's artworks. Why? Well he must have liked how Van Gogh used the subjective frame by putting all his emotions and experiences into his work.
