The only way I have got this right is by getting some 1000 or 1500 grit water (emery) paper and sanding the basin / bath until the stain is gone. Keeping the water paper wet seams to help alon with regularly wiping the area with a wet (damp) sponge to remove the bits sanded off.

It does leave fine scratch marks that can be removed easily enough with some car polish afterwards.

It does require quite a bit of sanding for the stubbern marks, be carefull not to sand through the gel coat though, which shouldn't easily happen as it is usually a few mm thick.

I have only resently done this, so I don't know what the long term effect of sanding a bit of the top layer is, but I really can't think of any negative effects. I wouldn't use this method repeatedly on the same spots though, as there is only so much you can sand away before causing new problems.
