What are the differences between Franciscans and Benedictines of the thirteenth century?

Franciscans follow the rule of St. Francis. They are part of a worldwide order - so all franciscans have an international structure. Thus, they can be sent anywhere in the world. They are called "friars" not "monks".

Benedictines are, however, rightly called "monks". A monk follows the rule of St. Benedict which is the oldest monastic rule that still exists today. Monks, unlike friars, make commitments to a particular community, called a monastery. They may be sent to other places and countries but they always return to their home monastery. Each monastery is independent and, therefore, they do not have an international or even a national order.
