Leader is more of a military term because the leader must lead by example; meaning he MUST do the same thing as the men he is leading. If his men are sleeping in the mud, he must sleep in the mud; if his men have no food he must eat no food; if his men must march up a hill, he must march up that same hill. He leads by example. A good leader will not have his men do something that he himself will not do. A supervisor is most commonly used as a civilian term because the supervisor does not have to do the same thing as the worker is doing. The supervisor is NOT EXPECTED to do the same thing...he doesn't need to set the example. The supervisor only needs to over-see the work, to see that it's done properly. A good supervisor will know HOW to do the work however, in order to show/teach a worker how to do the job properly. An Excellent leader who is an Excellent craftsman will make an Excellent supervisor. Although he may have to modify (tone down) his leadership skills abit to adjust to civilian requirements.
