What does bucking up mean?

If you buck up, you steel yourself to do whatever you need to do. Other terms that mean the same as this would be "man up" or even "cowboy up." This is usually seen in a situation where someone is afraid to do something, or worried about doing it. You would tell them, "Buck up, you can do it!" or "Buck up and just do it!"
