Why it is important to keep the system up to date?

As the operating system and programs get older without being updated they usually become more vulnerable to viruses and such as people spend time working on holes in the code and eventually find those holes and then the companies that are responsible for those programs come with updates to shore up the vulnerabilities that were discovered since the older version one could have on their system.
