Chapter three: Huts on the beach serves a number of purposes. Firstly it illustrates that time has passed since the events of the first two chapters. Jack's growing obsession with hunting pigs is highlighted, as is Ralph's frustration with the lack of willingness of the boys to carry out the very tasks which they have themselves agreed on. The diverging views and priorities of Jack and Ralph are shown and their increasing inability to grasp each other's viewpoints is made clear. Simon's visits to his 'secret place' in the jungle are mentioned for the first time.
