They did not want a war.

Those states felt they had a right to secede from the Federation in the same spirit in which they had originally joined it.

They felt that each state was soverign and had a right as such for states' rights to be respected and therefore their actions and beliefs should also be respected just as the South considered rights of other states as important and laudable.
