St. Edmund, the King of East Anglia, is best known for his martyrdom in the 9th century during the Viking invasions. He refused to renounce his Christian faith and was executed by the Vikings, who tied him to a tree and shot him with arrows. Following his death, he was venerated as a saint, and his cult grew, particularly in England, where he became a symbol of resistance against pagan invaders. His remains were later enshrined in Bury St. Edmunds, a site of pilgrimage.
