The name "Begonia" originates from the French botanist Michel Bégon, who was the governor of the island of Hispaniola in the late 17th century. The plant was named in his honor by the Swedish botanist Charles Plumier, who discovered it during his botanical explorations in the Caribbean. Plumier recognized the unique characteristics of the plant and chose to commemorate Bégon's contributions to botany with the name.
