Why do people ask 'why' when you ask them a question?

When people ask why in response to a question, frequently they want to know how involved and detailed an answer to give. One example would be (from a child) "where did I come from?" The child might not want to learn about sexuality, he may want to know his city of origin or the hospital he was born.
