They don't have a belt. At least my 98 doesn't they use a timing chain.

AnswerThe 2000 Frontier has a belt, I don't know how to change it but it sits above the water pump.

The 2001 frountier SE with 6cyl with out super charger does have a timing belt. I changed it today. It took me about 1.5 hours to get it all apart. and about two hours to put it back together after getting the parts. I waited until 157,00 miles after about 5 or 6 of the belts teeth fell off in one spot. I was extremely lucky I didn't bend or break any valves. It seemed remarkably easy compared to the chains I did years ago. My skil level is probably a little above average have been an industrial tech for 20 years and My neighbor who teaches Auto Mechanics helped me put it back together and I have a complete shop at home. It didn't seem to be that hard but a gear puller would of been a lot easier to remove the Harmonic Balance but came off with a couple of small pry bars. It also seemed to make things a lot easier to remove the radiator & reservoir. It also is wise to change the tensioner and two coolant hoses behind the timing cover and the water pump. they won't last as long as the new belt. It is also very important to put the same bolts that you took out of the timing cover back in the same holes the come out of especialy the bottom bolt under the harmonic balance all others are too long and will rubb. or vibrate out. Forget the timing light you won't need it. If your alignment marks and belt are aligned right it will start right up and run as smooth as silk. If your alighnment marks are right and it still runs rough and has a loss of power you probably have a bent valve or broken valve. Good Luck! I found a great set of picks at this site that gave me the confidence to change it. http://nissan4wheelers.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3766078435/m/91010906731 It was really alot easier than I thought As with most things in life it's not as hard as we think we just have to get off our butt's & JUST DO IT!
