When do polar bears leave their mothers?

Bears stay with mama bear for 2 years. Brown bears put the 2 year old bear up a tree and leave them there. Eventually the young bear crawls down the tree and is on his/her own. I am not sure how polar bears do this to force the 2 year old to leave "home."
