You can paint a floor with anything, but it doesn't mean it is a good idea.

Most paint manufacturing companies make several lines of "porch & floor enamel" (see note below) specifically designed for the amount of foot traffic a floor will get.

These come in both water (latex & acrylic) base and oil base.

Oil based paints are becoming more and more difficult to obtain in many areas as the paint itself is environmentally questionable.

Manufacturer are working diligently to come up with water based paints that have better durability, and there are a number of Excellent examples out there.

Talk to the sales staff in a reputable paint retail store, and ask questions about durability, warranty, environmental concerns, ease of application/clean-up, and how to dispose of the left over paint.

Note: The term enamel refers to the hardness level of the paint finish when dry, not the compounds of which it is made. Generally speaking, the high the "gloss" factor the hard the paint.
