What is a dumpy level?

A dumpy level (or spirit level) is used to establish the height difference between two measured points; or can be used to establish points (over an area/ or horizontal plane) which have the same height.

Dumpy levels have been replaced by more modern laser leveling devices, but are still used extensively in the construction industry as they are cheap and easy to use (although not as accurate as laser levelers).
