How big should a box turtle tank be?

Box turtles are endangered and illegal to have in many states. They are difficult for the average person to care for and are better left in the wild. If you came across one from a petstore then you need atleast a 55 gallon WIDE (not tall) tank. They need soil, a hiding place and a water area they can easily get into and out of to bathe.
