Fodder-wing viewed the world from a different perspective. He may have been "retarded" in nonpolitical speak, or special as we say today. Then again, he may have merely viewed the world, his world , in a way that was just different from the norm.

Fodder-wing was close to the animal world. The critters responded to him in special ways and he to them. One day he was watching the birds fly above. He longed for that freedom and reasoned he might fly too. He went to the hay(fodder) loft of the barn and stuffed the fodder in his sleeves as wings and jumped, injuring himself in the fall.

He was especially loved by his family and they nick-named him Fodder-wing as a result of his attempt to join the birds of the sky.
