What effect does smoking cigarettes have on lungs?

While carcinogenic in the long term, I don't think anyone's ever tried to do LD50 testing on cigarettes. Figures on nicotinic acid however, indicate that the number would be (1) very large to engender acute lethality, and (2) quite variable per person.
