Can a MRI detect ALS

An MRI cannot directly diagnose amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), as it does not show the specific nerve cell damage characteristic of the disease. However, it can help rule out other conditions that may mimic ALS symptoms by providing detailed images of the brain and spinal cord. In some cases, an MRI may show changes associated with upper motor neuron degeneration, but these findings are not definitive for ALS.
