Purpose of the First Crusade

Most of the Crusades into the Holy Land had one expressed purpose: To take it (namely Jerusalem, but the region as a whole) back in the name of the Catholic Church. There were also many Christians under Islamic Rule, so the Crusade's secondary goal was to free them.
